Big Thicket National Preserve
An NPS bucket truck with a crew of four from Chickasaw NRA has arrived in the park and will be assisting Big Thicket and Lake Meredith saw crews with clearing priority access areas. Road clearing to oil and gas wellheads is continuing. The Central incident management team continues to assist the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas with support. Randy Larrabee from Chickasaw NRA is on site and is now conducting FMSS assessments and entering data. Forty-four people are currently committed to the incident.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area
On September 16th, ranger received a report that a man was having a seizure at the Long View overlook. When they arrived on scene, they found an unconscious and unresponsive man lying face down near the picnic area. Advanced life support was provided by ranger/paramedic Tod Austin, and the man was flown to a local hospital by Mercy Air 11. Subsequent investigation revealed that he’d tried to hang himself from the shade structure in the picnic area, but that the knot had come undone when he jumped from the picnic table.

Virgin Islands National Park
Virgin Islands is currently recruiting for lifeguards to work on the island of St. John. Lifeguards work on designated swimming beaches within Virgin Islands National Park and are responsible for public safety, water-oriented assists and rescues, enforcing beach regulations, assisting visitors with first aid, and providing informational services and interpretation to beach users. Selectees will be required to work holidays, weekends, and shifts. The announcement is a six-month continuous vacancy and qualified applicants will be hired as needed. The positions are full-time permanent. Relocation expenses are not authorized and government housing is not currently available. Rental housing on St. John and St. Thomas is readily available. Cost of living is high and a COLA of 25% is added to base salary. Annual leave maximum carryover is raised to 360 hours and the accumulation of home leave allows for 30 days paid leave after two years of continuous service. These positions require lifeguard, first aid and CPR certifications along with valid driver's licenses. They are mandatory drug testing positions. Haleakala National Park
Haleakala National Park is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and creative individual interested in a lateral transfer to a permanent GS-5/6 administrative support assistant for its revenue and fee business program and visitor and resource protection program. The person in this position will serve as an administrative support assistant and will initiate and prepare travel plans and documents for program staff; input and verify payroll; and utilize spreadsheets and databases for a variety of programs/projects. S/he will be responsible for tracking of budget and finances for both the RFB and VRP programs, consisting of ONPS, non-ONPS, reimbursable, cost recovery and donation expenditure accounts in excess of $1 million and tracking a $3 million dollar revenue income accounts. S/he will additionally support the revenue and fee business manager with tracking reports and corresponding with commercial use authorization holders and special park use applicants and similar projects; and support the chief ranger with specific law enforcement administrative duties. S/he will support fee collection operations through assisting with remits and deposits and as a back up fee collector as needed. Haleakala National Park is located on the Island of Maui, approximately 30 miles from Kahului, the island’s largest commercial center (population approximately 25,000). The summit district is located at 7,000 feet elevation, where weather is often cool, wet and windy. Summer temperatures vary from 50 to 70 degrees and in winter range from the low 30’s to mid 60’s. Elementary, High Schools and complete shopping and medical facilities are available in Pukalani/Makawao area, about 19 miles from park headquarters. Public transportation is not available to the park; personal transportation is essential. Rental prices for an average one bedroom cottage range from $800 to 1000/month, $1400 to $1600/month a two bedroom cottage, and $1800 + for a three bedroom house. The median price for a home is $650,000 Moving expenses will not be paid Temporary park housing may be available.
