Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Stretched over 70 miles of barrier islands, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a fascinating combination of natural and cultural resources, and provides a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Once dubbed the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" for its treacherous currents, shoals, and storms, Cape Hatteras has a wealth of history relating to shipwrecks, lighthouses, and the U.S. Lifesaving Service. These dynamic islands provide a variety of habitats and are a valuable wintering area for migrating waterfowl. The park's fishing and surfing are considered the best on the east coast.

Weather

Wind is an everyday occurrence on the Outer Banks, and can range from gentle southwest breezes to strong northeast storm winds. Otherwise the weather changes rapidly and can be very unpredictable. Summer days are usually warm and humid, and are often broken by fast-moving but severe thunderstorms. Winter temperatures are usually cool, though the wind can make them bitterly cold. Spring and Fall days can vary a great deal between these two extremes.
Mosquitoes can be a significant problem throughout the warm- weather months. Clothing should be seasonal, but have extra gear available for wind and rain.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in the park open for climbing. It is generally open from 10:00AM until 4:00PM each day, from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends, depending on weather conditions. From September 4th through October 8th, the Lighthouse is open from 10:00AM - 2:00PM. The Lighthouse is closed for safety reasons whenever inclement weather approaches the area. CHILDREN MUST BE AT LEAST 38 INCHES TALL TO CLIMB THE TOWER AND MAY NOT BE CARRIED. Climbing the Lighthouse can be quite strenuous, especially on hot days. Visitors should consider their personal level of physical fitness before attempting this climb. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is 193 feet tall and visitors will climb 257 steps to reach the observation balcony.
