Nez Perce National Historical Park

For thousands of years the valleys, prairies, mountains and plateaus of the inland northwest have been home to the Nez Perce people. The Park contains 38 sites, mostly in Idaho, but others that follow a trail from the Wallowa mountains of Oregon, through central Idaho, Wyoming and Montana - 1500 miles all together.

There are two main Visitor Centers, one at Park Headquarters in Spalding, Idaho - 11 miles east of Lewiston and the other at Big Hole National Battlefield, 10 miles west of Wisdom, Montana. Both facilities are staffed year around by personnel who can answer your questions about the local area, the Nez Perce People and the War of 1877.

Getting There

By Plane
Air service is available into Lewiston, Idaho, 10 miles west of Park Headquarters and Visitor Center at Spalding, ID. Other Park sites are not easily accessible by plane.

By Car
The Park's 38 sites are best visited by car. Most are located on or near state highways. Check the "Touring The Park" section of the web page for details on each : http://www.nps.gov/nepe

Getting Around
There is no public transportation in the Park, most touring is done by auto , motorcycle and bicycles.

Weather

Elevations in the Park range from 700 feet above sea level to over 8,000, providing a wide range of climatic conditions, that follow the four seasons.

Visit the museums at Park Headquarters in Spalding, Idaho and Big Hole National Battlefield in Wisdom, Montana to view exhibits, take ranger-led tours, see movies on Nez Perce history and culture. Both places have walking trails and picnic facilities.
Recreational opportunities abound in the National Forests located throughout the Park. The Nez Perce National Historic Trail is part of the Park as is a portion of the Lewis and Clark Trail.
