Pecos National Historical Park

Pecos preserves 12,000 years of history including the ancient pueblo of Pecos, two Spanish Colonial Missions, Santa Fe Trail sites, 20th century ranch history of Forked Lightning Ranch, and the site of the Civil War Battle of Glorieta Pass.

The ruins trail, picnic area, and visitor center are the only areas currently open to visitors at this time. Closed areas such as the Forked Lightning Ranch, the Santa Fe Trail, and the Civil War Battlefield of Glorieta are available only through ranger guided tours. By Car
Twenty-five miles east of Santa Fe, NM off of Interstate 25. Visitors travelling north on I-25, take exit 299 to Pecos village and south two miles on HWY 63. Those travelling south take exit 307, five miles north to the park on HWY 63.

By Plane
No public transportation to the park

High elevation (7,000 feet). Cold winters and hot summers can be expected. Sunny most of the time. Visitors should expect snow on the ground in winter, wind in spring and rain usually in July and August.

Recommended Activities
The visitor center contains exhibits (text in English and Spanish), book sales and 10-minute introductory film available in English. One and a quarter mile self-guided trail through Pecos pueblo and mission ruins. Guided tours available to groups with advance reservations. Reservations for school groups and tour groups should be made two weeks before visit. Summer program includes weekend cultural demonstrations. Picnic area near mission ruins.

The average stay is one to two hours.
